Freight Advisory Committee
The Nashville Area MPO has established an advisory committee to guide its freight planning efforts. The primary responsibility of the committee is to help public-sector policy-makers, planners, and engineers better understand of the complexities associated with freight movement to more effectively guide public investment in the transportation infrastructure. The MPO has assembled a team of experts from the following sectors and industries:
- Trucking companies
- Rail transport companies
- Airports and aviation businesses
- Municipal and county planning and engineering departments
- Academia
- Large manufacturers and warehouses
- Federal and state planning and environmental agencies
- Law enforcement agencies
In working with those groups, the MPO hopes to gain an increased knowledge of the freight industry. The committee’s expertise will advise the MPO in developing planning assumptions, particularly related to the following types of questions.
- What are the factors that determine how, when, and where goods are shipped?
- What are the factors that influence the location of warehousing and distribution centers?
- What flexibility does the industry have in changing shipment routes, modes, or times?
- What are possible opportunities for the public and private sectors to work together to improve the transportation network to benefit the freight industry and the personal travel of the general public?
